Zhejiang DLY Automation Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has invested in three-face surface grinding equipment for the production of precision linear guide rails.

At the time of this announcement, installation and commissioning of the new grinders had entered the final stage. The equipment upgrade was planned to strengthen reference-surface processing, dimensional consistency and production efficiency in DLY's linear guide rail manufacturing line.

A three-face surface grinder is used to process multiple external reference surfaces of a guide rail under a controlled setup. These surfaces influence how the rail is positioned, supported and aligned during later manufacturing, inspection and machine installation.

Role of Three-Face Grinding in Linear Guide Rail Production

A linear guide rail contains functional raceways and external reference surfaces. The reference surfaces are important because they establish the geometric relationship between the rail, the machine mounting base and the moving guide blocks.

During three-face grinding, the rail's external surfaces can be finished within a controlled clamping arrangement. Reducing repeated repositioning helps limit errors caused by multiple setups and supports a more consistent relationship between the processed surfaces.

Depending on the machine configuration and rail-processing plan, three-face grinding can support the control of:

  • Rail width and height consistency
  • Parallelism between external reference surfaces
  • Flatness and straightness of the processed surfaces
  • Surface finish of the mounting and reference areas
  • Process repeatability across production batches

These characteristics support later precision processing and inspection. However, three-face grinding is only one part of linear guide rail manufacturing and does not independently determine the final accuracy of the complete guideway.

Reducing Errors from Repeated Clamping

When individual rail surfaces are processed through several separate setups, each reclamping operation can introduce a small positioning difference. The accumulated variation may affect the geometric relationship between the finished surfaces.

Multi-surface grinding is intended to reduce the number of separate positioning operations. A stable clamping reference also makes it easier to control the relationship between the rail's top and side surfaces.

This does not eliminate the need for process adjustment. Grinding-wheel condition, dressing, coolant, thermal stability, rail support and machine calibration must still be controlled during production.

Long guide rails require particular attention because small geometric variations can become more significant over the full rail length. Stable support and measurement are therefore important before, during and after grinding.

Equipment Installation and Commissioning

Installing a precision grinder involves more than positioning the machine in the workshop. The equipment foundation, leveling, electrical connection, coolant system, guarding and surrounding working conditions must be prepared before trial production begins.

During commissioning, the production team evaluates machine movement, spindle condition, grinding-wheel setup, workpiece clamping and process repeatability. Trial components are then measured to confirm whether the selected grinding parameters produce the required result.

Operators must also be trained in machine setup, wheel dressing, process monitoring and routine maintenance. Consistent equipment performance depends on both the machine condition and correct operation.

The new equipment should enter regular production only after the trial-processing and measurement results meet the defined internal requirements.

Three-Face Surface Grinder Installation Video

The following video records the installation stage of DLY's three-face surface grinding equipment. At the time of filming, setup and commissioning work was still in progress.

Effects on Production Consistency

The main purpose of the equipment investment is to strengthen process control rather than make an unsupported claim that every guide rail automatically reaches a higher accuracy grade.

When the equipment and grinding process are properly controlled, potential production benefits include:

  • More stable reference-surface geometry
  • Reduced variation caused by repeated setup
  • Improved processing consistency between rails
  • More efficient multi-surface finishing
  • Better support for subsequent grinding and inspection stages

Actual product accuracy remains dependent on the complete production route, including material preparation, heat treatment, straightening, raceway processing, drilling, grinding, cleaning and final inspection.

Rail accuracy must also be considered together with the guide block, preload, mounting surface and installation method. A precisely manufactured rail cannot compensate for an uneven or incorrectly aligned machine base.

Inspection After Grinding

Guide rails require dimensional and geometric inspection after the relevant grinding stages. The exact inspection items and tolerances depend on the guide series, nominal size and specified accuracy class.

Inspection item Reason for inspection
Rail width and height Confirm dimensional conformity and mounting compatibility
Reference-surface parallelism Evaluate the geometric relationship between processed surfaces
Straightness Identify bending or variation along the rail length
Surface finish Check the condition of mounting and functional surfaces
Rail-and-block running condition Confirm smooth movement and assembled guideway performance

Measurement results should be compared with the applicable product drawing or accuracy specification. One general tolerance cannot be applied to every guide rail size and series.

Linear Guideway Applications

DLY linear guide rails and blocks are used in CNC machine tools, industrial automation, packaging machinery, material-handling equipment, inspection systems and other machines requiring controlled linear guidance.

Product selection depends on load, moment load, speed, stroke, rigidity, accuracy, block configuration and operating environment. Square, flange, standard-length, long and miniature blocks are available for different installation structures.

For replacement projects, the complete rail and block markings, rail width, mounting-hole spacing and block mounting dimensions should be provided. For new designs, operating data and machine drawings help determine a suitable guideway configuration.

Continued Development of DLY Manufacturing

Established in 2005, Zhejiang DLY Automation Manufacturing Co., Ltd. manufactures linear guideways, ball screws, linear shafts and related motion components for industrial equipment.

The addition of three-face surface grinders forms part of DLY's continued investment in manufacturing equipment and process capability. It supports the company's objective of improving production consistency while responding to different customer specifications.

Standard and customized linear guide rail requirements can be evaluated according to the selected series, rail length, accuracy, quantity and application conditions.
