DLY 3D printer linear shafts are precision-ground round shafts used to guide print heads, build platforms and other moving assemblies. Common diameters include 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm and 12 mm, allowing the shafts to be paired with LM6UU, LM8UU, LM10UU, LM12UU and corresponding linear bearing housings.

The standard WDCS shaft is manufactured from GCr15 bearing steel with a hardened surface and controlled g6 outside-diameter tolerance. Its ground surface provides consistent contact with the bearing ball tracks, helping the carriage move smoothly along the shaft while maintaining repeatable positioning.

Standard and non-standard diameters, cut lengths, threaded holes, grooves, steps and other end-machining options are available for 3D printer manufacturers, automation equipment builders and linear motion distributors.

Standard Material

Product Features

Precision-Ground Surface

Controlled grinding and polishing provide a consistent running surface for recirculating-ball linear bearings. This supports smooth travel and reduces irregular resistance along the axis.

Hardened Bearing Steel

GCr15 bearing steel and an effective hardened layer provide the surface strength required for repeated contact with the bearing balls.

Standard Bearing Fit

Diameters can be matched with standard LM-series linear bearings, bearing blocks and shaft supports used in compact linear motion assemblies.

Custom Processing

Shafts can be cut to the required length and processed with end threads, internal threaded holes, flats, grooves, steps or drawing-specific features.

Specification notes:

  • Standard material is GCr15 bearing steel. C45 steel, alloy steel and stainless-steel options can be evaluated according to the application.
  • Hard chrome plating is available upon request and should be stated when requesting a quotation.
  • Available production and shipping lengths vary according to shaft diameter.
  • Threaded holes, external threads, steps, grooves, flats and other end details can be processed according to drawings.
  • WDP hollow linear shafts are available as a separate optional structure.

Common 3D Printer Sizes

Shaft Diameter Common Matching Bearing Typical Use
6 mm LM6UU Compact and lightweight motion assemblies
8 mm LM8UU Print-head and build-platform axes in compact printers
10 mm LM10UU Longer spans or assemblies requiring greater shaft rigidity
12 mm LM12UU Larger platforms and industrial printer structures

Shaft diameter should be selected according to the unsupported span, moving load, acceleration, support arrangement and allowable deflection. A larger diameter improves rigidity, but it also increases the mass and installation space of the motion assembly.

Custom Processing

Cut-to-length shafts Internal threaded holes External threads Machined steps Retaining-ring grooves Flats and keyways Hard chrome plating Drawing-based production

For machined shafts, the drawing should identify the finished diameter, total length, tolerance, thread specification, groove or step dimensions, surface treatment and quantity. Processing details are confirmed before production to ensure that the shaft fits the printer frame, supports and drive components.

Quality Inspection

  • Outside-diameter and tolerance inspection
  • Surface roughness and visual surface inspection
  • Straightness inspection according to shaft length and specification
  • Surface hardness and hardened-layer verification
  • End-machining dimension inspection against the approved drawing
  • Protective packaging to reduce corrosion and handling damage during transportation

FAQ

Q: Which shaft diameter is commonly used with an LM8UU bearing?

A: LM8UU is designed for an 8 mm nominal shaft. The shaft tolerance and surface condition must also be suitable for recirculating-ball linear bearings.

Q: Can the shafts be cut to the exact length required?

A: Yes. Shafts can be supplied in specified finished lengths. Cut-end condition, chamfers and additional machining should be confirmed when ordering.

Q: Can threaded holes or steps be machined at the shaft ends?

A: Yes. Internal threads, external threads, steps, grooves, flats and other features can be produced according to an approved drawing.

Q: Is hard chrome plating included as standard?

A: Hard chrome plating is available as an option and should be stated in the enquiry. The final material and surface treatment will be confirmed according to the operating environment.

Q: Are hollow linear shafts available for moving axes?

A: Yes. WDP hollow shafts are available separately. The outside diameter, wall thickness, length, load and processing requirements must be confirmed before quotation.

Q: What information is required for a custom quotation?

A: Please provide the shaft diameter, length, quantity, material, tolerance, surface treatment and machining drawing. The matching bearing model is also helpful for fit confirmation.
