SFY ball nuts are flange-type ball screw nuts designed for high-speed and high-lead linear motion systems. Their performance depends on the screw diameter, lead, circulation structure, accuracy, preload, mounting dimensions and operating conditions.
When selecting an SFY ball nut manufacturer, the key question is whether the manufacturer can supply a properly matched screw-and-nut assembly with the required accuracy, load capacity, running smoothness and dimensional consistency.
What Is an SFY Ball Nut?
An SFY ball nut is a flange-type ball screw nut used to convert rotary motion into precise linear motion. Its flange provides a stable mounting surface for installation on machine plates, linear stages and automation equipment.
The SFY structure is commonly used in systems requiring relatively high travel speed and a larger screw lead. Suitable applications can include automated handling equipment, packaging machinery, CNC equipment and other high-speed linear axes.
The ball nut and screw must have compatible raceway profiles, ball diameters and leads. Similar external dimensions do not necessarily mean that two nuts are interchangeable. An incorrect match can cause excessive friction, unstable running torque, noise, axial clearance or premature raceway wear.
Key Factors When Selecting an SFY Ball Nut Manufacturer
Screw diameter and lead
The screw diameter and lead affect linear speed, load capacity, rotational speed and drive torque. A larger lead produces more linear travel for each screw revolution, but it also changes the mechanical advantage and motor torque requirement.
A manufacturer should confirm the complete SFY model rather than quote according to the nut name alone. The screw diameter, lead, flange dimensions, overall nut length and mounting-hole positions must match the machine design.
Accuracy grade
The appropriate accuracy grade depends on the positioning requirement of the equipment. Rolled ball screws are suitable for many general automation applications, while ground ball screws are used when lower lead deviation and higher positioning accuracy are required.
Specifying an unnecessarily high accuracy grade increases cost without always improving the complete machine. The installation base, bearing arrangement, coupling, alignment and control system must also support the selected accuracy.
Preload and axial clearance
Preload can reduce axial clearance and improve axial stiffness. However, excessive preload increases friction, temperature and drive torque. The preload level should therefore be selected according to the required positioning performance, applied load, operating speed and duty cycle.
When an SFY nut is used as a replacement, the existing assembly should be checked for backlash, abnormal resistance and uneven running torque before a new nut is specified.
Speed and screw support
High-lead ball screws can provide fast linear travel, but the allowable rotational speed is still limited by the screw diameter, unsupported length, bearing arrangement and critical speed.
For long screws or high rotational speeds, the manufacturer should check the complete assembly rather than evaluating the nut separately. Proper fixed and supported ends help control vibration, deflection and positioning instability.
Operating environment
Dust, metal particles, coolant and insufficient lubrication can enter the ball circulation system and damage the raceways. If the machine operates in a contaminated environment, suitable protection, lubrication and regular inspection must be included in the design.
How SFY Ball Nut Quality Should Be Checked
SFY ball nut quality cannot be judged only from its external appearance. Dimensional inspection, running performance and compatibility with the screw are all important.
| Inspection item | What should be confirmed |
|---|---|
| Mounting dimensions | Flange diameter, mounting holes, nut length and reference surfaces |
| Screw specifications | Nominal diameter, lead, raceway profile and effective travel |
| Axial performance | Axial clearance, preload condition and axial stiffness requirement |
| Running condition | Smooth rotation, stable torque, noise and abnormal vibration |
| Accuracy | Accuracy grade, lead deviation and inspection length |
| Surface condition | Raceway damage, corrosion, contamination and flange deformation |
During manual inspection, the nut should move smoothly along the screw without sudden tight points or excessive looseness. The result should be evaluated together with the specified preload because a preloaded nut naturally requires more rotational force than a clearance-type nut.
More inspection points can be found in How to Check the Quality of a Ball Screw Nut.
Information Required Before Ordering
Clear technical information helps the manufacturer confirm whether a standard SFY model can be used or whether the complete screw assembly requires further dimensional verification.
- Ball screw diameter and lead
- SFY nut model or an existing product drawing
- Effective stroke and total screw length
- Accuracy grade and allowable axial clearance
- Preload or running-torque requirement
- Maximum rotational speed and acceleration
- Axial load and operating duty cycle
- End-machining and bearing-support requirements
- Operating temperature and contamination conditions
For replacement projects, provide the complete model number, dimensional drawing and clear photographs of the existing nut and screw. If the original designation is unavailable, the flange, mounting holes, overall length, screw diameter and lead should be measured before confirming the replacement.
SFY Ball Nut Solutions from DLY
DLY manufactures ball screw nuts and complete ball screw assemblies for automation equipment and precision linear-motion systems. SFY models can be selected according to the screw diameter, lead, accuracy, mounting dimensions and operating requirements.
DLY commonly uses 20CrMo for ball screw nut bodies and S55C for ball screw shafts. Available ball screw accuracy options include rolled C7 and C10 grades, as well as ground C5, C3 and C0 grades for applications requiring higher positioning accuracy.
Complete assemblies can also be supplied with end machining and matched support units according to the drawing. Before production, DLY can review the screw dimensions, installation arrangement and application conditions to reduce the risk of an incorrect nut-and-screw match.
