A linear guide rail does not have one universal minimum length. A short rail can often be manufactured for compact equipment, but the practical minimum depends on the rail size, mounting-hole pattern, carriage length and the amount of usable travel required.

This means that specifying only a rail length such as 80 mm or 100 mm is not always enough. Before ordering a very short linear guide rail, the rail, carriage and required movement should be considered as one complete system.

In practice, the shortest usable rail is usually determined by a combination of manufacturing limits and application requirements rather than by one fixed minimum dimension.

Is There a Standard Minimum Length for a Linear Guide Rail?

There is no single minimum rail length that applies to every linear guideway series.

Different rail sizes use different mounting-hole pitches, end distances and carriage dimensions. A miniature linear guide designed for compact mechanisms can normally be supplied in a much shorter length than a large heavy-duty or roller guide rail.

The supplier's cutting and machining capability also affects the practical minimum length. Rails are normally cut from longer stock, and the cut ends may require deburring, chamfering and finishing. Very short rail sections can become more difficult to hold and process accurately, so minimum length should be confirmed according to the specific guideway series and size.

Mounting-Hole Pitch Often Determines the Practical Rail Length

For profile linear guide rails, one of the first dimensions to check is the mounting-hole pattern.

Mounting holes are arranged at a specified pitch along the rail. There is also an end distance between the first or last mounting hole and the end of the rail. When a custom rail length is required, these dimensions must be considered together.

Simply cutting a standard rail at an arbitrary position can leave an unsuitable end distance or interfere with an existing mounting hole. This becomes especially important when the replacement rail must match mounting holes that are already machined into the machine base.

For this reason, a custom rail order should normally specify the required overall length and, when the mounting pattern is critical, the required mounting-hole positions or the original installation drawing.

The Carriage Must Fit on the Rail

A rail may be physically possible to manufacture but still be too short for the intended machine.

The carriage itself occupies part of the rail length. Additional rail length is then required to provide the necessary movement while keeping the carriage properly supported on the raceway.

Approximate required rail length = carriage length + required travel + end allowance

This is only a preliminary sizing relationship rather than a manufacturing formula. The final rail length must still be checked against the mounting-hole pattern, machine structure and selected guideway dimensions.

If two carriages are installed on the same rail, the length of both carriages and the required spacing between them must also be included when determining the minimum usable rail length.

A Short Rail Does Not Automatically Have Lower Accuracy

Using a shorter rail does not inherently make a linear guide less accurate.

Running accuracy and positioning performance depend more on the guideway accuracy class, rail straightness, mounting-surface accuracy, installation alignment, preload and the rigidity of the surrounding structure.

For compact equipment with limited travel, a short rail can therefore be completely suitable as long as the rail size, carriage arrangement and mounting geometry are selected correctly.

Miniature Linear Guides Are Better Suited to Very Short Installations

When installation space is extremely limited, selecting a smaller guideway series is usually more practical than cutting a large industrial guide rail unusually short.

Miniature linear guides use narrower rails, shorter carriages and closer mounting-hole spacing. This allows the complete guide system to fit into compact mechanisms while still providing controlled linear movement.

They are commonly used in compact automation equipment, inspection devices, electronic assembly systems, laboratory mechanisms and other applications where both installation space and travel are limited.

DLY supplies linear guideways in multiple sizes and configurations, including miniature guideways for compact installations. The final selection should still be based on load, moment, travel and mounting rigidity rather than rail length alone.

What Information Is Needed for a Custom Short Rail?

When ordering a short custom-length linear guide rail, the guideway series and size should be provided together with the required overall rail length.

If the rail must match an existing machine, a drawing showing the mounting-hole positions and end distances is preferable. The required carriage model and quantity should also be confirmed so that the usable travel can be checked before production.

For replacement applications, it is better to measure the original rail width, overall length, mounting-hole pitch, end distances and carriage dimensions instead of selecting the replacement rail only according to its total length.

Can a Standard Linear Guide Rail Be Cut Shorter?

Yes. Linear guide rails are commonly supplied in custom lengths, but hardened guide rails should preferably be cut and finished with suitable machining equipment.

Cutting a rail on site without considering the mounting-hole arrangement can create inconvenient end distances, burrs or damage around the cut surface. It may also make the rail difficult to mount if the remaining holes no longer match the machine base.

For new equipment, it is generally better to specify the required rail length to the manufacturer before production rather than purchasing a substantially longer rail and modifying it later.

How to Determine the Minimum Rail Length for Your Application

Instead of asking only, "What is the shortest linear guide rail available?", it is more useful to determine the rail length from the complete installation requirement.

Rail size → carriage configuration → required travel → mounting-hole pattern → final rail length

A very short rail may be technically manufacturable but provide insufficient travel or an unsuitable mounting pattern. In contrast, a compact application using a miniature guide may require only a short section of rail.

Before ordering, confirm the rail model, carriage quantity, required travel and installation dimensions together. This is more reliable than selecting a linear guide according to rail length alone.

Custom Linear Guide Rail Lengths from DLY

DLY can supply linear guide rails in standard and custom lengths according to the selected guideway series and machine requirements.

For a short-length rail or replacement guideway, send us the guideway model, rail size, required overall length, carriage quantity and installation drawing if available. We can check the mounting-hole arrangement and production feasibility before manufacturing.

If the original rail model is unknown, photographs and dimensional measurements can also help us confirm a suitable replacement.
