A ball nut can be used in food processing equipment, but its suitability depends on where it is installed. A standard industrial ball nut should normally be placed outside the direct food-contact and washdown zones, or protected by a suitable enclosure, bellows or machine cover.
The decision cannot be based only on whether the machine processes food. The equipment designer must also evaluate possible food contact, moisture, cleaning chemicals, lubricant leakage, contamination and the materials used in the complete ball screw assembly.

Where Can a Ball Nut Be Installed in Food Processing Equipment?
Ball nuts may be used to position filling heads, sealing mechanisms, cutting units, packaging tools, inspection devices and adjustable machine assemblies. However, the installation location determines the required level of protection.
| Installation Area | General Suitability | Main Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Non-food zone | A standard industrial ball nut may be suitable | Prevent lubricant, wear debris and corrosion products from reaching food |
| Splash or secondary exposure zone | Possible with additional protection and application review | Use covers, seals, drainage and a suitable lubricant |
| Regular washdown zone | A standard exposed assembly is generally unsuitable | Evaluate water, detergent, corrosion, sealing and relubrication |
| Direct food-contact zone | Do not assume that a standard ball nut is acceptable | The complete hygienic design and applicable regulatory requirements must be verified |
Installing the ball screw below the food path is particularly risky because leaked lubricant, condensation or wear particles may move toward the product. Where practical, the drive should be positioned outside or above the processing zone and isolated from the product by a protective structure.
What Requirements Must Be Checked?
A ball nut is only one part of a complete ball screw assembly. The screw shaft, nut, balls, return system, seals, lubricant, support bearings and protective cover must all be considered when assessing the application.
An ordinary wiper or end seal can help retain lubricant and reduce the entry of loose particles, but it should not automatically be treated as a waterproof or hygienic seal. If the assembly is exposed to frequent cleaning, an external enclosure or bellows is usually more important than relying only on the ball nut seals.

Standard industrial ball screw nuts are not automatically certified for direct food contact.
Lubrication and Contamination Control
A ball nut requires lubrication because the balls repeatedly contact the screw and nut raceways. Operating the assembly without suitable lubrication can cause increased friction, heat, noise, raceway damage and premature fatigue.
If incidental lubricant contact with food is possible, the machine designer should select a lubricant with the appropriate registration and application conditions. NSF H1 lubricants are intended for machinery locations where incidental food contact may occur. This does not mean that the lubricant is a food ingredient or that unrestricted contact is acceptable.
Important: Using an H1 lubricant does not make the ball nut or the complete ball screw assembly "food grade." Material suitability, sealing, installation position, cleaning access and the complete machine design must still be evaluated.
The lubrication plan should define:
- The lubricant manufacturer and exact product designation
- Compatibility with the ball nut, seals and operating temperature
- The quantity applied during each lubrication cycle
- The relubrication interval under the actual load, speed and cleaning conditions
- How excess lubricant is prevented from entering the processing zone
- How old grease, water and contaminants are removed without entering the ball circulation system
Frequent washdown can remove grease or introduce water into the ball nut. Applying more grease without correcting the ingress path may only push contaminated lubricant through the circulation system. The enclosure, drainage and relubrication method should therefore be designed together.
Are Standard DLY Ball Nuts Food Grade?
DLY standard ball screw assemblies normally use an S55C screw shaft and a 20CrMo ball nut. These materials are selected for industrial load capacity, hardness and wear resistance. They should not be described as stainless steel or as certified food-contact components.
A standard DLY ball nut may still be considered for a protected, non-food-contact motion axis inside packaging or food-processing equipment. Before selection, the equipment manufacturer should confirm that:
- The ball nut is isolated from exposed food and food-contact surfaces
- The enclosure prevents lubricant and wear debris from escaping toward the product
- Cleaning water and chemicals cannot enter the ball circulation system
- The selected lubricant meets the machine builder's applicable requirements
- The maintenance procedure does not introduce contamination into the processing area
If the application requires stainless steel construction, a specific coating, certified lubricant, special seals or direct product-contact compliance, those requirements must be stated before quotation. Availability should be confirmed for the complete assembly rather than assumed from the ball nut model alone.

Information Required Before Selecting a Ball Nut
"Used in a food machine" is not enough information to confirm a ball nut. A useful enquiry should include both motion requirements and environmental conditions.
| Information | What to Provide | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Machine function | Filling, cutting, positioning, sealing, lifting or adjustment | Defines the movement and duty requirement |
| Installation zone | Direct contact, splash zone, washdown zone or protected non-food zone | Determines protection and material requirements |
| Cleaning conditions | Water pressure, detergent, cleaning frequency and temperature | Identifies corrosion and lubricant-loss risks |
| Motion data | Load, speed, stroke, acceleration, duty cycle and accuracy | Supports ball screw and nut model selection |
| Compliance requirement | Required lubricant registration, material documentation or customer standard | Prevents unsupported compliance claims |
| Installation drawing | Ball screw position, enclosure, end machining and surrounding components | Shows possible contamination and mounting risks |
DLY supplies standard and customized industrial ball nut models for different ball screw structures. View the DLY Ball Nut range and send the complete operating requirements for model and compatibility confirmation.
The final decision on food-industry suitability belongs to the equipment designer or responsible compliance party because it depends on the complete machine, installation zone and applicable market requirements-not on the ball nut alone.
